Children are often grouped together by age. This is not a natural environment for a child to develop. Younger children learn from older children and older children refine techniques, learn new skills, and develop patience and responsibility by caring for and teaching younger children. If children are constantly grouped together by age, they are deprived of the learning opportunities which come from interactions with children of different ages, and the children's development can be stunted as a result.
Creating family units by permanently assigning children to one caregiver, is an effective way to create functional mixed age groups. We encourage orphanages implementing our Early Childhood Development program to use this technique. |
The OCI Early Childhood Education program is designed to combine age groups safely and effectively. Children are grouped together according to their gross motor development to make sure children can learn from each other in a safe way.
