"Every child is considered brilliant with unlimited potential." - Dr. Maria Montessori
What is Montessori?
The Montessori Method is a hands-on educational curriculum developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900's. The Montessori Method is based on the belief that children have an innate desire to learn, using their five senses and movement. The Montessori curriculum consists of self-correcting educational materials, that look like toys and puzzles. These materials are designed to teach the child different ideas and concepts, often building in difficulty as the child grows.
Dr. Montessori was an Italian physician who specialized in pediatrics and psychiatry. While working in an institution for children considered mentally disabled, Dr. Montessori observed that the children lacked sensory stimulation. She began creating materials designed to stimulate the children's five senses. Much to everyone's surprise, the children started rapidly improving. After playing with Dr. Montessori's materials, many of the children were able to leave the institution and attend a regular school.
Dr. Montessori continued to develop sensorial educational materials by observing children's natural development. She gave children the freedom to choose their own activities and discovered that all children have an innate desire to learn and are capable of directing their own learning. Over the past century, Montessori materials have remained unchanged, and Montessori schools have become some of the most elite schools in the world.
Children attending Montessori schools begin learning the basics of phonetics as soon as they learn to speak, enabling them to learn how to sound-out words and read as early as 4 years old. Math also begins at a young age, starting with toys and puzzles designed to teach toddlers, not only to count, but also that abstract numbers correlate to concrete objects. This concrete introduction to mathematics allows young children to understand difficult abstract ideas such as addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, fractions, and basic algebra.
