"Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher." -Japanese proverb
Observing when a child is ready to learn a new concept or skill vs deciding when a child will learn a new concept or skill is a core concept in our Teacher Training program.
Teachers play one of the most important and influential roles in a child's development. In early childhood, teachers are educators, caregivers, mentors, guides, observers, role-models, friends, and co-learners. They are responsible not only for the child's cognitive development but also for the child's social, emotional, and physical development as well.
Our teachers are trained to be careful observers recognizing each student's strengths, weaknesses, learning style, and temperament. Teachers use these observations to monitor their student's developmental needs, carefully recording each child's developmental milestones in monthly assessments. Understanding each student's individual developmental needs allows teachers to introduce materials and activities that capture the child's curiosity and foster a love of learning.
100% of our teachers are local members of the community. While empowering the community, local teachers ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of our ECD program by making certain that the information taught in the Teacher Training program remains within the community. Local teachers understand the challenges their students face on a daily basis. This makes them better able to communicate with their students in a meaningful and culturally relevant way.
Our teachers receive ongoing support and training with monthly check-ins from OCI Trainers during the first year. For immediate support, teachers can reach out via phone or email to our local offices who will dispatch an OCI team member to provide support within 48hrs, if a solution can not be managed remotely. Teachers are provided with tablets installed with short training videos that cover everything taught during the Teacher Training program including instructional videos on all Educational Materials.
We set our teachers up for success by ensuring they are thoroughly trained and educated. Our month-long intensive Teacher Training program provides direct hands-on training from international experts in the fields of Early Childhood Development, Early Childhood Education, Developmental Therapy, Health, and Nutrition. Teachers graduate the training equipped with a thorough understanding of the needs of their students and easy to understand reference materials they can use to brush up on everything covered during the Training program.
We believe it's important to hold our teachers accountable to the standards outlined during our Teacher Training program. This accountability not only ensures the safe and healthy development of the children enrolled in our ECD program but also ensures that the time and money invested during the Training program isn't wasted. Our ECD program monitors the health and development of every child enrolled through monthly developmental assessments and electronic medical records. OCI experts use this data to analyze trends. If the children in a class are consistently performing below average, OCI team members are dispatched to reinforce training or make staff changes.
